AKZO NOBEL BASE CHEMICALS

Base Chemicals

Akzo Nobel Base Chemicals is an important player for chlor-alkali products with production facilities in the Netherlands (Delfzijl, Hengelo and Rotterdam), Sweden (Bohus and Skoghall) and in Germany (Bitterfeld and Ibbenbüren).
Base Chemicals' head-office is located in Amersfoort.

Akzo Nobel Base Chemicals is your preferred partner in a sustainable chlor-alkali business and water treatment chemicals. We aim for this position by providing solutions and services and long term agreements. We strive for excellence in the areas of health, safety and environment.

Caustic Soda

Caustic soda is the most commonly used product for improving the alkalinity of process streams, for instance in the pulp and paper industry and in aluminium production. We produce over 1 million tons of caustic soda, mainly in state-of-the-art membrane electrolysis plants.

Chlorine

Chlorine is an important chemical in our day-to-day life and is a major building block for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry. Akzo Nobel Base Chemicals has chlorine production plants in The Netherlands, Germany and Sweden. In total we have an annual production capacity of some 1000.000 tonnes, abt 10% of West-European chlorine production

Dimethyl Ether or Demeon® D

Demeon® D is Akzo Nobel Base Chemicals' trade name for dimethyl ether (DME). DME is a widely used propellant for aerosol products. DME offers unique advantages such as solvency power and water miscibility. Based on the flexibility in use offered by these advantages, DME is an appreciated propellant in many aerosol products like hairsprays and other cosmetic aerosol products, paintsprays and other technical aerosol products.

Base Chemicals delivers DME in bulk, in specially designed dedicated  tank containers. As the dedicated aerosol propellant supplier for the aerosol industry, Akzo Nobel facilitates an Aerosol Safety and Application Laboratory (ASAL).

Hydrochloric Acid

Hydrochloric acid is the aqueous solution of the colorless gas hydrogen chloride. The solution is a strong acid, and as such it takes up a prominent place in the industry.

The hydrochloric acid delivered by Base Chemicals is produced by several different methods. The type of method largely determines the quality of the hydrochloric acid. We supply hydrochloric acid in solutions from 30% to 37%. Base Chemicals supplies hydrochloric acid in tanker trucks. Hydrochloric acid is also available in drums for destinations outside Europe.

Iron and Aluminium Salts

Iron and aluminium ions are excellent flocculants and coagulants in water treatment applications. Ferric chloride, the major product in this group of metal salts, is produced by dissolving pure iron in a two-tier reaction: pure iron is dissolved in ferric chloride resulting in ferrous chloride solution, which is subsequently oxidized with pure chlorine to ferric chloride.

Base Chemicals uses selected iron from the metal industry, and pure chlorine from our own electrolysis plants, to produce a virgin ferric chloride solution with concentrations of 40 and 45%, and a solid ferric chloride hexahydrate. The solutions are supplied to customers in tanker trucks. Other iron salts, such as ferric chloride sulphate, ferrous chloride, ferrous sulphate, and aluminium salt such as polyaluminium chloride (PAC) and aluminium sulphate (alum), are being produced and supplied equivalently

Sodium Hypochlorite

Sodium hypochlorite (also known as bleach or as 'Eau de Javel') is the most effective disinfectant for industrial applications, swimming pools and household cleaning . Its production is based on very pure chlorine gas and high quality caustic soda lye.

Sodium Sulphate Anhydrous (Na2SO4)

Sodium Sulphate Anhydrous is a white free flowing crystalline powder and is not classified as hazardous according to the EEC Dangerous Directive and Dangerous Preparation Directive. The Sodium Sulphate Anhydrous is supplied in road tank cars, in Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers (FIBC's).
